Today, July 19 marks the first official solo record for Mike Angus, one-half of the brother song-writing team in The Wheat Pool. No, Mike is not leaving the band, they haven’t broken up, not on hiatus. If anything, Mike and the band consider this a major compliment to the band’s efforts.
“I think the strength of The Wheat Pool is the obvious collaborative energy of four guys writing together, and that’s exciting,” Angus explains. “What was exciting about these songs was knowing they’d end up on a solo record, so I could focus on my strengths and what I bring to the band, all the while having the freedom to flesh the songs out exactly how I was hearing them in my head.”
“Hymns” is the result of this journey. Written primarily during a month-long excursion to Italy, it explores more personal introspective moments, allowing the subject matter to compliment the musical tangent.
Mike will be on the road later this summer with Andy Shauf, in east and western Canada, and continue to play dates through the summer and fall with The Wheat Pool. Both will likely give fans an opportunity to catch his material and pick up the record.
